I am hoping to make it to Africa in 2020. I want to do a really big trip and tick off heaps of bucket list items. Hopefully, I can make it happen. I will DEFINITELY be using this as a guide!!

Hi Kiersten, thanks for this inspiring list! I too have some of these ideas on my list, particularly Egypt, Namibia and Mozambique.

I’ve noticed West Africa doesn’t get much love in travel writing, so just wanted to throw it out there for anyone looking for a really off-the-beaten-track experience in Africa. I was there for 3 months (solo and female) in early 2018 and it was the defining travel experience of my life.

For English speakers there’s Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia. If you speak a bit of French you can get by in Guinea, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire. All these countries are currently peaceful and safe enough in terms of crime, if you use common sense and have a bit of travel experience.

Super culturally interesting, amazing mountains, gorgeous uncrowded beaches, friendly curious locals (very few tourists there so everyone wants to know what your deal is). Food is not so great but whatever. It is a challenging place to travel, no avoiding uncomfortable transport sometimes, but worth it in my opinion.

    Happy travels!

    • Thank you so much your recs babe!! I’ve heard the beaches in Ghana are amazing!
