Mauritius is a fairly well-known destination in Europe yet if you ask anyone in the states if they’ve ever heard of it, they’ll probably say, “Mauri-what?” Located 2,000 miles off the southeast coast of Africa, the small island is the definition of paradise.
Besides relaxing on the soft white sand beaches, you can explore the colorful capital, hike waterfalls, do sunset yoga, snack on some traditional street foods, sample the island’s rum, scuba dive, and a whole lot more.
If all of those activities haven’t quite convinced you to hop on a plane just yet, keep reading and see why this year-round destination is absolutely heavenly!
Although you could argue that there is no wrong time to visit Mauritius, the “best” time to visit is from October to December, which is their early summer season. During this time, you’ll have ideal beach conditions, sunny weather, and warm temperatures.
From December through March, you will find larger crowds as it’s the peak tourism season, so if you’re looking for a quiet getaway, you might want to steer clear during these months.
January through March is considered cyclone season so if possible, avoid these months! Once those rains clear up, from May to October, the temperatures drop from hot to balmy, still giving you plenty of sun to take a dip in the turquoise waters.

Language: Mauritians are proficient in multiple different languages. In fact, the Mauritian Constitution does not make mention of an official language. It’s one million citizens speak English, French, Mauritian Creole, Hindi, Telugu, Mandarin, and more! Out of all of those, you’ll find that English is the most widely spoken so you won’t have to worry about brushing up on a new language before your visit.
Currency: The official currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). 1 USD is equivalent to approx. 42 MUR.
Credit Cards & ATMs: Nearly all tourist shops, restaurants, and hotels accept credit or debit cards. If visiting smaller areas of Mauritius, you might find that shop owners expect payment in the form of cash. If you need some cash, you can find an ATM outside banks, in airports, larger supermarkets, and even some shopping malls.
Plugs: In Mauritius, the plugs are type C and G, the standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50 HZ. I recommend buying a universal adapter (make sure it has surge protection) and using a converter for hairdryers and hot tools.
Safety: Mauritius is an extremely safe country, with the most dangerous acts being a mosquito bite or a bad sunburn. Exercise caution as you would anywhere, and you will run into no issues.
As a black traveller in Mauritius you can relax and enjoy yourself. The locals are welcoming, warm and friendly. The only negative experiences I have had as a black traveller in Mauritius were from other travellers when visiting 5 star resorts. You have just as much of a right as any one else to be in those spaces. Don’t let the stares stop you from enjoying your trip and living your best life.
