March is one of the best months to jump on a plane. Depending on where you are in the world, the weather can be starting to warm up or you might still be getting that late winter chill.
Whether you’re looking to stay in a beachy resort in a coastal town or you’re looking to frolic in gorgeous flower fields, there are plenty of destinations that make for the perfect vacation in March.
Here are the best destinations to travel to in March!
The Galápagos
March is by far the best month to visit the Galápagos as the water temps and clarity are at their best. This is ideal for swimming, diving, snorkeling, paddle boarding, etc. It is also one of the best times to witness the islands’ unique wildlife.
It’s hatching season for the tortoises and mating season for male frigate birds…so get your cameras ready!
If you’re looking for a more low-key vacation, avoid going during typical spring break weeks, which usually range from the end of March to the middle of April. However, if you’re a family looking to visit, book ahead for those weeks as things often book up quickly.
Norway
If you aren’t tired of the snow yet, Norway is the spot for you.
There is still plenty of snow in March, perfect for winter activities such as skiing, dog sledding, and snowshoeing. If you don’t love the idea of snow, don’t fret. There is still plenty of sunny days, with days lasting longer. This is also arguably one of the best times to see the Northern Lights.
Bogota, Colombia
Colombia
Because of Colombia’s proximity to the equator, the weather is quite tropical, with a lot of rainfall. March is considered dry season meaning you will be met with sunny days, clear skies, and a light breeze, perfect conditions to explore.
March also falls outside of peak season meaning prices will be lower and crowds will be relatively thin.
Italy
Italy comes alive in the spring! Spots like Florence, Lake Como, and Rome become painted with colorful flowers.
And while you may encounter some chilly rain showers, you may encounter some sunshine as well. Prepare for unpredictable temps but don’t let that deter you. Italy is full of museums, cathedrals, and shops where you can soak in the culture while staying dry.
Japan
With the peak of winter past, March marks the beginning of spring for Japan. Cherry blossoms begin to bloom at the end of the month and the entire country makes their way outside to see the spectacle. They celebrate with picnics and festivals. This annual ritual is known as hanami.
Petra, Jordan
Jordan
Because Jordan is a desert, it can get quite hot, quite quickly. Luckily, the hot temps haven’t hit the country yet in March, making it one of the best times to visit. The crowds are thin, the weather is mild, and the almond and olive trees are still in blossom.
It’s also a great time to spend a night in Wadi Rum and visit Petra!
India
March is one of the most popular months to visit India due to the great weather and the famous Holi festival.
The festival of color, set by the Hindu calendar, involves throwing colorful powder and paint. It’s an experience that everyone needs to experience at least once in their life. Just don’t wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty!

Sri Lanka
If you’re looking for a tropical getaway, look no further!
Sri Lanka is hot during the month of March, with the occasional rainstorm to help it from becoming too much. If the idea of laying on the beach for a week sounds like your ideal vacation, visit the south coast where you’ll find beaches lined with palm trees and grand resorts.
Mizen Head
Ireland
Last but not least, what would a list of March destinations be without Ireland? The country turns green as it prepares to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Head to Dublin for a full-blown celebration at the pubs and bars. Just don’t forget to wear your green!
Hi Kiersten,
I’ll be traveling to Italy (Venice, Florence, and Rome) in March 2021. Any tips on what to pack for the fluctuating weather?
Hey Maria! I’d definitely bring things you can layer – sweaters over dresses, cardigans, scarves, and things like that. While there can be some warm days, it’s still quite cool at that time!
