Located 100 miles north of the equator, the country is a tropical paradise that’s home to swoon-worthy beaches, incredible wildlife, and enthralling culture.
While Sri Lanka has been overlooked by nearby hot spots Maldives and India, it’s quickly become one of the best off-the-beaten-track destinations to explore. Plus, it’s super affordable, making it ideal for travelers looking to splurge or explore the island on a shoestring.
If Sri Lanka isn’t on your bucket list yet, add it right now. You won’t regret it one bit!
Sri Lanka is affected by two separate monsoons, making the weather quite complicated for such a small country. The weather can vary dramatically, but in a nutshell, the best time to visit the west and south coasts is December to March. For trips to the east coast, book your flights between April and September.
If you visit Sri Lanka in April, you’ll be around for the Sinhala & Tamil Nadu “New Year” festival. The event lasts a week, and it’s an incredible experience for foodies!
Another thing to keep in mind is that the temperatures average around the mid-70s to mid-80s, with humidity, in the coastal and lowland areas. However, in the hill country, you’ll need to pack warm layers as temperatures drop in the evenings.

Language: Sinhala and Tamil are the two official languages of Sri Lanka. However, you’ll find in the main tourist areas that English is widely spoken.
Currency: The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the currency of Sri Lanka.
Credit Cards & ATMs: Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Sri Lanka, even in smaller towns. That said, it’s always good to carry a few rupees with you. ATMs are also common in the country, and you’ll have no trouble finding one that accepts foreign bank cards.
Plugs: The plugs in Sri Lanka are type D, M and G. The standard voltage is 230 V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz. I recommend buying a universal adapter (make sure it has surge protection) and using a converter for hairdryers and hot tools.
Safety: Sri Lanka is a safe destination for solo female travelers. However, the country does experience terrorist attacks from time to time, but these aren’t directed at tourists.
