Booking Flights with Dohop

Dohop is a flight finder based in Reykjavik—similar to sites like Orbitz or Expedia—but much more user-friendly in my opinion. Because of an awesome algorithm and business strategy, Dohop always seems to find the best deals for flights, hotels, and car rentals on the market—its resources include over 1,200 airlines and travel agencies.

Here are some reasons you should book your next flight with Dohop!

How Dohop Finds You the Best Deal

The site dates back to 2004, when the founder, Icelander Frosti Sigurjonsson, was struggling to find cheap flights from France to Iceland. Back then, there weren’t many options for passengers flying from continental Europe to Iceland, and people often had to struggle to find connections that worked.

Dohop provides a solution: instead of searching for the cheapest price among airlines and codeshares, it searches for all possible routes often mixing and matching legs from different (but still budget) airlines. By taking advantage of these “self-connect” flight options, passengers can save money by booking tickets through two or more unrelated airlines.

As Dohop’s website states, “Travel should be simple. Travel should be fun.” And they recently redesigned the website making everything easy to interact with.

The interface is extremely simple; its color-coded menu bars, casual language, and approachable design make you want to travel somewhere. You can browse hotels by city or by theme—in case you feel like a weekend in a spa hotel or need a business property on short notice.

Unique Features

Dohop has a unique section called Travel Guides, which lets you filter countries by the airlines that fly there, airlines by the countries they fly to, or even low-cost airlines by the continent. Its blog recently posted a fun collection of graphs that shows the growth of world tourism, from most visited tourist attractions (Las Vegas tops it) to contribution of tourism to the global economy.

One of my favorite features of the site is Dohop Go! Take advantage of the unique feature that encourages travel on a whim—just enter how much time you have, what months you’re traveling and it’ll let you know  the cheapest available flights from your home airport—so if you’re feeling fanciful, simply book your affordable flight and go!

You can also download the app for iOS and Android, and search flights from anywhere on your phone.

Awards and Accolades

It’s not for nothing that Dohop has received numerous awards, including the Best Technology Website by TravelMole in 2006, Best Travel Website by Time Magazine in 2007, and The World’s Leading Flight Comparison Website at the World Travel Awards in 2014.

In 2016, Iceland even awarded Dohop the Icelandic Innovation Award, a highly prestigious award that includes past winners, such as the creators of EVE Online and the Blue Lagoon resort.
