Great article. I’m hoping to spend a year studying abroad next year but once I graduate I would love to go backpacking before getting into my career. I have a feeling I’m going to be doing it alone so this was really encouraging. I have volunteered in Thailand with others and went to Morocco by myself but stayed in a volunteer house so I knew I would always be with people. There was a moment in Morocco when I was alone (not out of choice haha) but I do remember how liberating it felt and how many people I met and talked to. What you’ve done and all your travels have truly inspired me!! So hopefully I’ll have the courage to go it alone some day 🙂

  2. Thanks for this article. I am really excited about traveling abroad solo but haven’t yet. Even at 30, my mom would probably worry so much that she would buy a plane ticket to meet me lol. So I will have to be sneaky about it and let everyone know the day before I leave. I can only imagine how invigorating it would be to explore alone and I will admit, I am a selfish traveler. If I have limited time, I really don’t want to do what everyone else wants to do so at times on vacay I tend to go off on my own anyway.

    • Start somewhere that isn’t too intimidating and see how you like it. Sounds like you will!
