China is a country full of rich history and culture, making it one of the most fascinating places in the world! Bustling metropolises like Shanghai and Hong Kong are contrasted by breathtaking natural scenery like Zhangjiajie’s “Floating” Peaks and impressive historical sites like The Great Wall of China.
But planning a trip here is not as easy as other destinations around the world—with restrictions on social media apps, and a potentially massive culture shock, you’ll need to do your research beforehand to help your trip go smoothly.
China is a massive country that’s home to diverse landscapes and climates, making it difficult to pinpoint the best time to travel to the country. If you’re after warm weather with fewer thundershowers, plan your trip to China in the spring (March to May) or the fall (September and November).
You’ll be around for the changing of the seasons. Picture blooming cherry blossoms lining the walkways in Beijing’s Yuyuantan Park and beautiful autumnal hues and multicolored lakes inside Sichuan’s UNESCO Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve.
If you can handle snow, China is beautiful (but very cold) in the winter. Pack your warmest layers and get ready to scoop up amazing deals on flights, accommodation, and entry tickets!

Language: The official language of China is Mandarin. However, linguists believe that there are over 300 dialects spoken in the country!
Currency: The currency in China is the Renminbi.
Credit Cards & ATMs: Outside of major cities, China is still a cash-based economy. However, if you’re visiting a big city like Shangai or Beijing, you shouldn’t have a problem using your card. If you need to draw cash, find a Bank of China, China’s Merchant Bank, or ICBC. These banks are known to be friendly to foreign cards. If you have an American Express, you likely won’t find an ATM that accepts the card.
Plugs: The plugs in China are A, C, and I. The standard voltage is 220 V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz. I recommend buying a universal adapter (make sure it has surge protection) and using a converter for hairdryers and hot tools.
VPN: Social media sites like Facebook and Instagram are blocked in China. You also won’t be able to access your Gmail or rely on Google Maps to get around. To get around these restrictions, make sure you have a VPN installed on your laptop and phone before you arrive.
Safety: For most visitors, China remains an overall safe country. Petty crime does happen but is not common. Like other destinations around the world, awareness is key.
