From lounging on the beaches of Kefalonia, Greece, to wandering around charming villages in Switzerland, these lesser-known destinations will tick all your boxes and then some.
Get ready for a European summer filled with culture, quaint towns, incredible food, stunning beaches, and unforgettable memories away from the crowds!

Puglia (and Bari), Italy
Ah, Italy – the land of pasta, pizza, and picture-perfect coastlines.
But if you’re looking to dodge the summer tourist crowds of Rome and Positano and truly experience la dolce vita, Puglia is the place to be.
Start your adventure in Bari, where the streets are alive with the smell of freshly baked focaccia and locals going about their day. Then, venture into the heart of Puglia to admire the Baroque architecture and the whitewashed homes that dot the hillside.
And did I mention the beaches with crystal-clear water and limestone cliffs? Soak up the Italian sun without the hassle of overcrowding!
Istria, Croatia
Croatia may be known for its stunning coastline, but if you’re looking to escape the masses, then Istria is the place to be.
Located in the northwest corner of Croatia, Istria is a rich blend of Italian and Slavic heritages, hilly scenery, and rocky beaches.
Wander through the cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses, then sample some prosciutto, gnocchi scampi, sweet wines, and the world-famous truffles.
From the ancient ruins of Pula to the quaint village of Rovinj, there’s no shortage of things to do in Istria.
Stay at Villa Meneghetti
I stayed at Villa Meneghetti on my last trip to the Istria region and cannot recommend it enough. This boutique hotel feels like stepping into a quaint village, with gourmet food and incredible wine served at their farm-to-form restaurant.
Kefalonia, Greece
A summer in Greece is all about island hopping, ouzo-filled adventures.
But as you may know, Greece is one of the most popular European destinations in the summertime so if you’re craving a taste of the Greek islands without the crowds, then Kefalonia is where you want to be.
Famous for its endless beaches, dramatic landscapes, and magical caves, this is an adventurer’s dream destination.
Spend your days lounging on secluded beaches, exploring hidden coves, and eating all the delicious Greek food
Budva, Montenegro
Montenegro is the jewel of the Adriatic.
If you’re seeking a summer destination that combines history, charm, and a vibrant nightlife scene, then you need to consider Budva.
Located along the coastline, Budva boasts ancient sites, medieval walls, and a bustling Old Town. But it’s not all about history here – come nighttime, the city comes alive with bars, clubs, and beach parties that rival those of its more famous neighbors.
Whether you’re soaking up the sun on Mogren Beach or dancing the night away in the city center, Budva is an underrated summer destination to add to your itinerary.
Menorca, Spain
Escape the tourist hordes of Barcelona, Madrid, and Ibiza and discover the untouched beauty of Menorca – one of Spain’s best-kept secrets.
Unlike its bustling Balearic siblings, including Mallorca and Ibiza, Menorca offers a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Spend your days hiking along coastal trails, snorkeling in secluded bays, or simply lounging on the sandy shores with a sangria in hand. And, of course, swimming in the many pristine beaches.
With its laid-back vibe, Menorca is the perfect destination for a Spanish summer of tapas and siestas.
Menorca Hotels
There are some incredible properties all over Menorca. Depending on your type of trip, you can often find a lot of adults-only hotels too! Some of the best luxury properties include Villa Le Blanc (part of Leading Hotels of the World), Hotel Torrelbanc (a luxury farm stay), and Faustino Gran (in the Ciutadella old town).
Aveiro, Portugal
Looking for a taste of Venice without the crowds?
Let me introduce you to Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal – where colorful boats glide along picturesque canals, and historic buildings line the waterfront.
Aveiro may not have the grandeur of its Italian counterpart, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm.
Spend your days exploring the winding waterways, sampling local delicacies like ovos moles and Pasteis de nata, or soaking up the sun on nearby beaches.
Lyon, France
Lyon offers amazing French Food and a rich history without the crowds of Paris.
Known as the culinary capital of France, you’re in for a treat at one of the many traditional bouchons and Michelin-starred restaurants. But Lyon isn’t just about food – it’s also full of history and culture, with its UNESCO-listed old town, Roman ruins, and medieval and Renaissance architecture in Vieux.
And then there’s the contrasting modern Confluence district on the Presqu’île peninsula between the two rivers that run through town.
Bergen, Norway
Bergen is Norway’s gateway to the fjords.
Head on a scenic fjord cruise to see Norway’s dramatic landscapes – from soaring cliffs to cascading waterfalls, and the iconic fjords. Or strap on your hiking boots and conquer the trails of the surrounding mountains, including the iconic Fløyen or Ulriken.
It’s the ultimate summer adventure destination in Europe.
Your itinerary might also include wandering around the colorful wooden houses of Bryggen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visiting renowned museums like the KODE Art Museums.
Bern, Switzerland
Step back in time and discover the medieval charm of Bern – a truly underrated spot in Switzerland. With its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and picturesque old town, Bern is like something out of a fairy tale.
And with its gorgeous scenery and lovely temperatures, it’s the perfect escape from the summer heat.
Explore the city’s historic landmarks, such as the Zytglogge Clock Tower and the Bern Cathedral, or simply stroll along the banks of the Aare River for the views.
I recommend taking a scenic walk up to the Rose Garden for the best views over the Old Town, which looks just like a medieval city surrounded by a moat!
Himare, Albania
Himarë is a hidden gem along the Albanian Riviera and is the perfect place to visit in Europe in summer to avoid the crowds if you’re on a tight budget. Its pristine coastline, turquoise waters, and quaint villages offer a truly memorable taste of The Balkans.
Whether you’re lounging on the beach, exploring ancient ruins, or sampling fresh seafood at a local taverna, Himare promises paradise at an affordable price.
With its warm hospitality and authentic charm, it’s the ideal destination for a summer getaway off the beaten path.
Bonus! Sail Sardinia and Corsica
I had to include a bonus– sailing around the breathtaking islands of Corsica and Sardinia.
As you navigate around these stunning islands, you’ll discover secluded beaches and pristine bays that can only be reached by boat.
While ports like Bonifacio in Corsica may get busy, the real charm of sailing lies in the ability to escape the crowds altogether!
