    Great post! I’ve found Auckland to be a surprisingly good hub for nature-type adventuring, even though us non-Aucklander kiwis tend to diss the city 😉

    A couple I’d add are Tiritiri Matangi Island, one of NZ’s first predator-free reserves. It’s a nice ferry ride from downtown Auckland (the viaduct), and has epic birdlife, snorkeling (in summer… winter is brrr), and views of the Hauraki Gulf. Just a short walk from the ferry terminal there’s Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari, which heads out each afternoon to look for common dolphins, Bryde’s whales, and even killer whales if you’re lucky. Suuuuuper cool.
