I have always joked that I am listening to music 24 hours a day… I even have music on while I’m sleeping. Rest assured, if my life is ever turned into a movie, I’ve already put together the soundtrack. Music has the power to take me back in time to a very specific moment, emotion, travel destination or home. I’m sure almost everyone can relate.

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

For all of you fellow music addicts, I give you,

“My Top Ten Travel Songs”

that just never get old…

1. “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones

This song takes me back many years ago to young love and dreaming of far away places. My first love and I would play this song and dream up how one day we would run away to Paris and kiss under the Eiffel Tower. It sounds so funny to me now, but it’s the memory of my innocence and wonder of the unknown world that keeps this song in a special place in my heart.

2. “Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

This song just embodies the all-American road trip anthem. I imagine driving the coast of California in a convertible with the top down, sun shining, bare feet and a vintage camera. It takes me home.

3. “Mykonos” by Fleet Foxes

I still don’t know why every time I hear this song I want to cry. Everything from his timeless voice, the haunting melody, the poetically written lyrics… it’s sort of sad but incredibly beautiful. He refers to running away from a broken past in search for something beautiful like the gentle coast of Mykonos. A great song for those moments of self reflection.

4. “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and The Heart

Another folk song (so you may be sensing a theme in my travel music taste). I just love music that tells a story considering I’m a story teller myself. Maybe I’ll start writing music one day. Anyways, this is my homesick song. “I miss your face like hell.” We all get homesick and I miss my friends and family and my little dog every day.

5. “The High Road” by Broken Bells

This is my big city song. The beat and harmony make me think of the comforting chaos in New York City.

6. “The Suburbs” by Mr Little Jeans

While I love the original song by Arcade Fire, this version of the song is freakin amazing. It brings me back to Bali and reminds me of one of the best summers of my life.

7. “Welcome Home, Son” by Radical Face

The epitome of a television series intro song. But you can’t deny the awesomesauceness of it. This is another emotional song for me. As the song climbs, I get filled with memories of those indescribable moments of  overwhelming happiness in travel. That moment where you could just spin in circles staring up into the sky. That moment where you feel like you’ve come home, even though you’re thousands of miles from “home.”

8. “Spectrum” by Florence + The Machine

You could argue the true meaning of the lyrics of this song. I’ve heard explanations of everything from religious, LGBT to Illuminati undertones. I simply get really damn happy when I hear this song. The lyrics “we are shining and we will never be afraid again” make me think of how I felt after my first ever trip abroad. I felt empowered and life had a new vibrancy. I wanted to shout at the top of my lungs! Thanks to Florence and her powerful voice so that I didn’t have to.

9. “World Spins Madly On” by The Weepies

My hopeless romantic side comes out now and again. I’ve written about how I struggle with travel and relationships so this song has played very loudly on wine drenched nights all over the world. At the end of the day the world does spin madly on and Mr. Right will come when I’m ready. Until then, I’ll keep this song close to my heart.

10. “Carousel” by Iron and Wine

I could listen to any of Iron and Wine’s songs on repeat for the rest of my life. This song in particular is not only beautiful but very personal to me. I sometimes feel like my life is a carousel, coming home and leaving again. Sometimes it feels like a time warp and you expect that things won’t change while you’re away but they do.

So there you go! My favorite travel songs!
