I arrived in Auckland this morning and my Kiwi friend, Wally, and friend from back home, Blaine, were already waiting for me at arrivals. After three and a half months of traveling it’s so nice to see familiar faces! Blaine had just arrived from San Diego so we were both struggling a bit from jet lag. Wally drove us all back to his place in the city to shower and get settled.
After getting our heads back on straight, we walked down to the Auckland Viaduct for lunch. The Viaduct reminds me of a New Zealand version of the Sydney or San Diego Harbor. It’s a little area right on the water with bars and restaurants. Everything is all hyped up for the World Cup and the All Blacks support is everywhere! The harbor is even filled with massive super yachts from wealthy travelers coming for the Rugby festivities. We decided on lunch at a spot called Degree and grabbed pizzas and ciders. It’s great to be back to the western world but my bank account is not happy!
Wally’s roommate and a group of their friends planned on going out for the New Zealand vs Japan match. We walked back down to the Viaduct to watch the match at O’Hagan’s and it was absolutely packed! After a couple of beers, and establishing that The Blacks were going to dominate Japan, we left early and grabbed some tapas and drinks at Kermadeck. I filled up just enough to walk to Tyler St. Garage and begin the fun. A few vodka sodas and some shots of Cafe Patron later and we were well on our way to having a big night.
We walked down the street to 1885 Britomart. The Britomart is really trendy and has great music and delicious specialty cocktails. The best part of the night was when Wally went to the bar to order drinks and the girl next to him says “Can you not touch me?” It led to a huge blow-up ending in Wally covered in red wine and the girl getting kicked out. It was quite hilarious to watch the whole episode unfold. Lesson to the ladies: Not every guy wants you.
